Simone Upwind - Finding the Right Mode

Coach: Vaughn Harrison2 community comments

One of the most common questions in sailing is whether to prioritize height or speed upwind. The answer is both, but not at the same time. In this debrief, we break down how to find the right mode for the conditions and your current performance level.

Key Takeaways

  • 1.Height mode vs. speed mode - know when to use each
  • 2.VMG is the ultimate measure - progress toward the mark matters most
  • 3.Transition between modes smoothly - do not get stuck in one mode
  • 4.Conditions dictate mode - flat water favors height, waves favor speed

Understanding the Modes

Height mode means sailing closer to the wind, pinching slightly, and prioritizing progress toward the mark over boatspeed. Speed mode means bearing off, letting the boat run, and prioritizing boatspeed over pointing angle.

Both modes have their place. The mistake is getting stuck in one mode when conditions call for the other. Great sailors are constantly transitioning, reading the conditions, and adjusting their mode accordingly.

Finding Your Default

Most sailors have a default mode they gravitate toward. Some naturally sail high and slow. Others bear off and go for speed. Neither is wrong, but you need to know your tendency and consciously adjust when conditions demand it.

💡 Pro Tip

If you are not sure which mode you are in, check your telltales and compass. Height mode has telltales flying straight back and a higher compass course. Speed mode has telltales angled out and a lower compass course.

When to Switch

Switch to speed mode when you need to build speed, when waves are large and you need to surf, or when you are trying to create separation from other boats. Switch to height mode when you want to point closer to the mark, when the water is flat, or when you are positioning for a layline.
